Summer Week 9 - Psalm 34 | Sunday Service 8/9/26

We don’t always know the details going on in the psalmist’s life when writing, but with Psalm 34 we are told what prompted David’s words. This psalm was written when David was hiding out in a cave, fleeing for his life. The full story can be found in 1 Samuel 20-22:5. David could have attributed his escape and protection to his own cleverness or cunning – but in this psalm we see David crediting God alone for his deliverance. It’s a psalm of rejoicing after a real life experience of victory. Knowing the context instructs us in how to read and apply what we read. Rather than using the psalm as a false gospel of prosperity, we can rejoice with David – and with others—at the Grace of being protected from harm, giving all praise, honor, and glory to Jesus. It is in humility that we magnify the Lord and exalt His name forever! God’s grandeur and splendor are always in existence, we just don’t always see it. But when we are gifted glimpses of His glory, it’s like a magnifying glass has been placed over our spiritual eyes – and praise flows from our lips.
